Snowy Landscapes : I went with a drive with Auke to see the frosty trees on the outskirts of Waalwijk. This is a reasonably rare sight so I was really glad to have caught it! I used a circular polariser for all these shots to darken the sky and bring out the frost and snow. These came out rather well!

Boat trip to Picton : After saying goodbye to Jeff, Cath, Jarrod and Jack the dog after spending several days with them in Wellington, we set off again to cross over to the South Island. With our car all sorted out (finally!) we were able to get on our way. The trip over took about 3 hours and we landed at Picton. Once at Picton we drove to Nelson and set up in a caravan park in the tent for the night.

Sight Seeing and Mt Kaukau : On our last day in Wellington, we waiting for the auto electrics in the car to be sorted out. While waiting we did some last shopping and got a few more necessities which was great. The car was finished around lunch time which allowed us to do more sightseeing in the afternoon. We drove to the top of Mt Victoria which had some impressive views, we tried Patricia's pies down south (which was actually rather ordinary to my surprise) and had a look at the beehive, parliment house and the Wellington cathedral.

That afternoon, Cath took us up Mt Kaukau which was good for more stamina building before we hit the south island the following day!

Drive to Wellington : After doing Mt Taranaki we decided to drive straight to Jeff's place in Wellington. We completed this and stopped at a few places along the way.

The first on the beach was at Waitarere on the West coast on the north island. It was cool to be able to just drive onto the beach like that!

and the second was at the Otaki Gorge which is a wonderful green valley where you can have a swim, but holy hell the water was painfully cold!

Mt Taranaki Hike : This was the first real big mountain hike for both me and Fem in New Zealand. This was Mt Taranaki just south of New Plymouth on the west coast of the north island. We didn't want to push ourselves too far so we planned on just going on this big loop which took us roughly half way up the mountain then across for a fair way and then back down. Thats exactly what we did.

This is a stunning mountain to climb and highly recommend it to anyone. Just watch out for this section called "The puffer" as that is exactly what it will make you do!
We ended up being higher than the low level clouds and the peak of the mountain is among the mid level clouds. Amazing views from where we got to. The wind chill was freezing and we both really enjoyed it.

Coast to Coast hike : As our first 'official' hike we chose the 16KM day long Coast to Coast hike. This was a simple hike that would be more of a test of our fitness and hiking boots than anything else. The scenery was impressive, we both climbed to the summit of two dormant volcanoes and got to take in some good city sites. The winter garden in the Auckland Domain had some excellent flowers on display which made some for great shots as shown below!

Both of our feet were very sore by the end of it, but we were glad to have completed it knowing it is the start of some wonderful sightseeing and hiking!

A good site to visit on a clear day to ensure you get those stunning views.

Whale Watching on Moreton Bay : On Father's Day 2007, Femke and I went whale watching from Redcliffe. The large boat took us out to just north of Moreton Island and we stayed around that area for about 4 hours getting lots and lots of photos. The highlight was when a pod of about 20 dolphins mingled and played with the 6 or so whales that hung around our boat. Femke got a little queasy (seasickness) but not as bad as lots of small children downstairs!

North Stradbroke Island : One very sunny and unusually warm weekend, Femke and I went off to North Stradbroke island. We left on Friday evening right after work and spent two nights at the Anchorage hotel near Point Lookout. We didn't take a car, so most of the time we were on foot. I reckon we walked about 20km over the 2 days! Good exercise! We saw plenty of sights and beaches around the point and had swims at Frenchmens and Main beaches. The water was so cold it took your breath away, but it was so refreshing once you got used to it!

Byron Bay 2007 : One cool day in July 2007, I took mum and Femke to a small town called Ocean Shores which is just north of Byron Bay. There we caught up with Pam who is the wife of Jim from the Bullo river trip. We spent a relaxing day catching up on current events and showing Pam the bullo book that I created for mum for her birthday.

During the day Femke and I took a nice long walk along the beach, where I got a couple of shots. After a nice lunch, we then headed off to Byron Bay lighthouse to see the sunset.

On the way back my in car GPS was totally incorrect with regards to the roads in the local area, so after a few backtracks and a drive to a distance local town we were back on the main highway again! First time my GPS has ever let me down! It just needs a map upgrade I think!

RTCB Beaudesert : Bron, John and myself were invited out by Potsie to take some photos for the RTCB event at Beaudesert. It was a hot sunny day with about 430 dirt bikes around various circuits. We were given offical orange vests and were given free reign over the course. Unfortunately we were on foot, so we could not cover the entire 14km long track, but we were about to get a lot of shots from a good jump nearby and a walk up some hills got us a few different angles. You can see the photos from Bronwen and John here.

All shots are with the new lens with the exception of the surfers at the end that were done by my zoom. The day was a bit overcast, but it didn't rain. I found the new lens a little more harder to shoot with than expected. It just seems easier to take bad shots in you don't know exactly what you are doing. Sounds like a challenge to me :)

The ocean was perfect for kite surfers which is where I got most of my shots. The 70-300 performed very well, since it's difficult to keep the focus on the fast moving kite surfers. Elebana Falls with Gav and Marty : On a wet Sunday, Gav, Marty and myself hiked back to Elebana Falls in Lamington National Park. Gav wanted to test out his new 10-22mm lense and his new manfrotto tripod, while I wanted to reshoot these falls with my 30D, my manfrotto too and play with the RAW settings. It was a real photographers hike where we stayed there for a good 2 hours, took our time with the shots and stretched the patience of Marty. But we got some great effects with the ND filters and gav's ultra ultra wide 10-22mm!

For post processing, I actually used Picasa of all things to created these tweaked RAW files. Photoshop did not make the images look quite as good without a lot of tweaking. This is also due to my inexperience with RAW images as well.
The only flaw was Picasa's RAW to JPG coversion utility was a bit flawed (images are noticably dithered) but overall for a quick method of tweaking RAW images into good looking JPGs I was impressed with Picasa.

National Handball Finals : Bronwen and myself went to the National Handball Finals held at the Gold Coast on June 11th. We were late getting there so we only caught the last 3 games. The lighting was not the best in the stadium for catching sharp fast moving shots of the games. We obviously could not use the flash as we were literally metres away from the players so any bright lights might have startled their shots. These are the best of the roughly 500 shots I took in about 4 hours.

After dragging Gavin along with the promise of cooler air and less humidity (Brisbane is so hot right now) we set off on the West Canugra Fall Circuit in Lamgington National Park in the Gold Coast hinterland. The way in was good.. all downhill. We ended up at a waterfall which was remarkably avagerage and not at all worth the hike in and the subsequent painful hike back out. But at least I did get to do a hike that was not done before. Mt Warning : In the middle of June 2005, I was able to scale Mt Warning with several of my work friends. This mountain was by far the MOST strenuous mountain hike I have ever attempted. Luckily I was able to (eventually) make the summit. I would like to thank my fellow hikers for their patience while waiting for me to catch up with them :)
The photos were good, but the day itself was a little glary. I will attempt this hike again in Spring and a bit earlier in the morning so I will make the summit by midday.

Australia Zoo : On a slighty overcast but general sunny Sunday, Chris, myself and my mother went to Australia Zoo. This is the home of Steve Irwin the world Famous Crocodile Hunter. It's a facinating place and highly recommended if you are on the north side of Brisbane with a day to kill.

Alma Park Zoo : One weekend my folk and I took Chris (Brazilian Exchange Student) to Alma Park Zoo to check out the Australian wildlife. It was a rather hot day, but it was reasonably cool in the shade of the trees. Not a bad zoo, but I am looking forward to when we go to Australia Zoo in a few weeks.

Moreton Island : During my holidays, I decided to take a three day break to Moreton Island which is just east of Brisbane. It had been about 15 years since my last trip. I stayed at Tangalooma resort and highly recommend it! The weather was mostly fine and I got to explore the place and take some great shots!

Box Forest Circuit with parents : After showing my folks the photos of the first trek through the Box Forest Circuit, they wanted to see it for themselves! So merely three days later I was back walking the same trek again!. We didn't do the full circuit, just a trek to the bottom section which had all the major waterfalls and back again. It was a great day with both my parents and a family friend Rose.

Box Forest Circuit in Lamington National Park : The Box Forest Circuit in Lamington National Park is a 10.6KM round trek through some of the thickest rainforest I have ever seen. The twisty and obsticle ladden path also takes you over two creeks that have several large waterwall sections. I completed this walk (trek) with my cousin Teela in just under 6 hours, so I definately got my exercise for the day!

Gold Coast Indy Car : I went to the Gold Coast Indy car race with Mickey, Jazzy, Eileen and Yogi. It was the first time to such a race for all of us. Wow those cars sure were very loud! Most of the photos I took were not the best though.. due to the fact I was so close and the cars were going so fast, and that the 300d had trouble deciding whether to focus on the cars or the fence on front of me.
